How Long Until You See Abs? Here Is the Actual Arithmetic
Most people are four months from visible abs and think they are four weeks. The calculation takes two minutes, needs no app, and changes what you do next.

The reason most cuts get abandoned is not hunger. It is the gap between how long someone thought it would take and how long it is taking.
Nobody quits a project on week nine of a twelve-week plan. They quit on week nine of a plan they privately believed would be finished in six. The number in your head is doing more damage than the deficit is, and it takes about two minutes to replace it with a real one.
The calculation
You need two figures: your bodyweight, and a rough body fat percentage. The second one is unreliable — see the error bars on any body fat reading — but it does not have to be precise, because the answer is a range and you are trying to find out whether it is eight weeks or thirty.
Three steps.
1. Work out your lean mass. Everything that is not fat.
Lean mass = bodyweight × (1 − body fat %)
At 85 kg and 20% body fat: 85 × 0.80 = 68 kg of lean mass.
2. Work out what you would weigh at your target body fat, assuming you keep all of that lean mass.
Target weight = lean mass ÷ (1 − target body fat %)
Targeting 12%: 68 ÷ 0.88 = 77.3 kg.
3. Subtract. 85 − 77.3 = 7.7 kg of fat to lose.
At half a percent of bodyweight per week — the rate that lets you keep the most muscle, for reasons covered in the twelve-week plan — that is about nineteen weeks.
Not eight. Not “by summer” if it is April.
If you divide 7.7 by 0.425 kg — half a percent of 85 — you get eighteen, not nineteen. The extra week is there because the half percent is of your current weight, and your current weight keeps falling, so the weekly loss shrinks along with it. That compounding is what the tables below are built on, and the gap it opens gets wider the further you have to go.
The table, if you would rather not do it yourself
There is a quiet piece of algebra hiding in those three steps. If you lose a fixed percentage of bodyweight per week, the time it takes depends only on your starting and target body fat — not on how much you weigh. A 70 kg lifter and a 110 kg lifter, both at 20% and both heading to 12%, are looking at the same number of weeks.
At 0.5% of bodyweight per week:

Two things about these numbers before you use them.
They assume you keep every gram of lean mass, which is the best case rather than the expected case. And they assume you hit the target rate every single week from the first, which nobody does. Both push the real answer up, not down.
Why the calculator says twelve weeks and your body says eighteen
Every quick estimate online uses the same static arithmetic: a kilogram of fat is about 7,700 calories, so divide the fat you want to lose by your daily deficit and you have your answer.
That model is wrong in a specific, well-characterised way. Hall and colleagues built a dynamic model of adult metabolism for The Lancet precisely because the static one over-promises. Its central property: the body’s weight response to a change in energy intake is slow — the half-time to settle at a new steady weight is on the order of a year — because expenditure keeps falling as you get lighter.
Be careful what you take from that. It describes how long the whole response takes to play out, on a population-averaged model, and it is not a correction factor you can multiply your twelve weeks by. What applies to you is the reason underneath it: the static calculation treats your maintenance calories as a constant, and they are not.
Part of it is simple physics — a lighter body costs less to move and less to maintain. Part of it is not. Rosenbaum and Leibel describe adaptive thermogenesis: energy expenditure in a reduced-weight person falls by more than the change in body mass predicts. Trexler, Smith-Ryan and Norton lay out what that looks like for athletes specifically — lower resting expenditure, reduced spontaneous movement, hormonal changes that all point the same way.
The practical translation: the 500 calorie deficit you set in week one is not a 500 calorie deficit in week twelve. It has been quietly closing the whole time, which is why the plan needs checkpoints and a weight trend rather than a calculation done once.
The first two weeks lie to you
Early in a cut the scale falls faster than the arithmetic allows. This gets read as being ahead of schedule, and then week five gets read as a stall.
Neither is true. Kreitzman and colleagues set the mechanism out decades ago: glycogen is stored with a large amount of water — on the order of three to four parts water for every part glycogen — along with the potassium that comes with it, which is exactly why running glycogen down distorts body composition estimates taken during a diet. Cut carbohydrate, run glycogen down, and the water goes with it.
Their paper puts no kilogram figure on that, and neither will I. What it tells you is that the substance leaving in week one is not the substance you are trying to lose.
The same effect runs in reverse at the end of a diet break, which is why the week you eat at maintenance shows a gain and the week after shows it coming straight back off.
So: ignore the first two weeks entirely for the purposes of estimating your rate. Start counting from week three.
The rate that keeps your muscle
You can go faster than half a percent per week. It costs something specific.
Garthe and colleagues ran the comparison in elite athletes: one group losing 0.7% of bodyweight per week, another 1.4%, both strength training four times a week on individualised diets. During the intervention the slower group gained 2.0% lean body mass against 0.8%, and 12% upper body strength against 6%. Both groups ended up shifting about the same total bodyweight — the fast group simply took fewer weeks over it — but the slower one gave up a bigger share of the fat it started with: 31% against 23%.
The rest of that paper belongs here too. Retested twelve months later, the group differences had gone and both had drifted back to their starting weight. Everybody regained. So the rate decides what you keep on the way down; what you do after the cut decides whether you keep any of it, and that is the part more people lose.
Murphy and Koehler’s meta-analysis puts a number on the other side of it: across the trials they pooled, an energy deficit of around 500 calories a day was the point at which lean mass gains stopped. Their recommendation for anyone lifting to preserve muscle during weight loss is to stay under it.
Run both through the arithmetic for our 85 kg example. At 0.5% a week the answer is nineteen weeks. Push to 1% a week and it becomes about ten. You save nine weeks, and you spend them on the muscle underneath — which was the entire point of getting lean.
Garthe’s fast group ran at 1.4%, not 1%, so treat 1% as sitting between a rate that was tested and one that was not. The direction of the cost is measured. Its exact size at 1% a week is not something anybody has put a number on.
The weeks that are not in your estimate
Whatever number you just produced, it is the floor. The things that get added to it are boring and completely predictable:
- Diet breaks. Peos and colleagues found that breaking a twelve-week restriction into three-week blocks separated by weeks at maintenance produced the same fat loss and the same lean mass retention, with meaningfully lower hunger. It also took fifteen weeks to deliver twelve weeks of restriction. Worth doing. Not free on the calendar.
- A week you were ill, a week away, a week where two social events landed badly. Assume two or three of these across a long cut, because there will be.
- The end being slower than the middle. The last few percentage points come off the place you want them gone from last, and by then your maintenance calories have fallen.
A reasonable working rule: take the table’s number and add about a fifth. Nineteen weeks becomes twenty-three. If that is still acceptable, you have a plan. If it is not, you now know that before week six rather than during it.
What the number is actually for
It is not motivation. A twenty-three week estimate is not motivating and is not supposed to be.
It is for one decision, made before you start: cut now, or build first.
If you are five points of body fat away, you have a two-to-three month project and you should run it. If you are fifteen points away, you are looking at most of a year of eating less than you want, and the honest question is whether the physique you would uncover at the end of it is one you want — because you will uncover exactly the muscle you have now, and not a gram more. A long cut is a reveal, not a build.
That is the calculation almost nobody runs, and it is the one that decides whether the next six months are well spent. When you do decide to run it, the twelve-week plan has the numbers.
